GREENER PRINTING
The truth is that the print industry is hugely energy-hungry, uses high volumes of solvents and produces massive levels of waste.
Print is the UK's 6 th biggest manufacturing industry, turning over in excess of £10 billion per year.
Printing also has the lowest take-up of environmental policies of any major industry
However - the general apathy of the industry as a whole shouldn't blind us to the greener changes that some pioneering printers have adopted.
Recent times have seen the development of;
Waterless printing, which uses resin and eliminates the need for IPA solvents- dramatically minimising VOC emissions and water consumption.
Recycling of waste solvents where chemical solvents for cleaning print presses were previously disposed of as hazardous waste, they can now be re-used safely and almost indefinitely
Unsustainable Mineral inks can now be replaced by vegetable-based solutions (largely soya). |
